We are very excited to announce the official launch of Walking the Invisible City at the Oakland Museum of California on Sunday, August 7th. Please join us for a free-admission day of family-friendly events including a docent-led bike tour of historical downtown Oakland, tamale-making demonstration with Tina Tamale, tai chi for all and lots of other fun hands-on art activities.

Also starting on August 7th, you will be able to access a cell phone audio tour that enriches the stories told on the markers scattered around downtown Oakland.

As a preamble to the launch, on Friday evening, August 5th, the Oakland Museum of California will be hosting a special screening of the documentary film, A Profile of Four Squares.

More about Walking the Invisible City

Walking the Invisible City, downtown Oakland’s first permanent self-guided walking tour, is the culmination of a 3-year community based project, 10,000 Steps.  This unique walking tour, with permanent conversational sidewalk markers, will explore hidden local stories, architectural and cultural history, and points of urban transformation.  The completion of 10,000 Steps: Walking the Invisible City will create a rich and lasting legacy that is built upon a deep and integrated relationship with local community stakeholders.  This project is currently under construction.

OMCA’s annual Dìas de los Muertos Celebration has been one of the Bay Area’s most popular community events for 16 years, drawing thousands of participants annually to mark the traditional Meso-American celebrations and give them a contemporary artistic twist. 

On October 23 from 12 noon to 4:30 pm, the public will celebrate Dias de los Muertos included in regular OMCA admission beginning with a ritual in front of OMCA’s Oak Street Entrance. Following the ceremonia, visitors will enter the Gardens invited by the sounds of music and conversation, the smells of food and burning copal incense. 

Throughout the day there will be food and drinks including the Tamale Girl food booth, demonstrations and sale of arts and crafts at a mercado, music and dance, and countless activities for visitors of all ages, as well as access to the exhibition and galleries.

The fiesta honors the legacy started in 1944 by family matriarch and business founder Mama Rosa Lopez. “It’s a party not only to celebrate our business but also our community,” says Tina “Tamale” Ramos, third generation owner. La Borinqueña’s fiesta coincides with the Oaklavía street festival which will transform downtown Oakland, through temporary traffic closures, into a recreation zone with car-free city streets.     Since opening its doors in 1944, La Borinqueña Mex-icatessen and its family owners have witnessed great changes including the transformation of this Old Oakland neighborhood. Meet the founders of 10,000 Steps Oakland who are developing the walking tour: “Walking the Invisible City.” Shop with Oakland jewelry artist Gabrielle Lessard of Mangosteen. Listen to an artist talk by Oakland-based Joaquin Alejandro Newman of Forrealism whose work is currently on display in the restaurant. Sports fans can purchase tickets for Old Oakland Neighbors Day at the Raiders on September 19, 2010, when the Silver and Black attack the St. Louis Rams and greet Raiderettes.
